Are Electric Blankets Safe to Use All Night? What JKMAX Just Recalled (2026)
The short answer
You are cold every night by nine. The heated blanket is how you fall asleep. It stays on until morning.
If it is a JKMAX, unplug it tonight. JKMAX recalled about 195,000 heated blankets and heating pads sold on Amazon. The federal recall notice says the wire inside can overheat.
The gray one is on the recall. The blue one is on the recall. If yours came from Amazon with a white remote, turn that remote over before bed.
What this guide answers
What else in your bedroom needs a second look?
The free 3 minute scan goes room by room and tells you what to swap first. You give a first name and a cell, and your score comes by one text. It is free because I would rather you see your own house than take my word for it.
Take the free home scanWhat did JKMAX just recall?
Quick answer: every heated blanket and pad it sold on Amazon. The trouble sits inside the fabric.
You lay it on the bed after dinner. You set the remote to high before you brush your teeth.
You stood by the bed longer than you meant to, a hand flat on the blanket, waiting for the warm.
No shame in that. It was right there on Amazon, in four colors.
You wanted to be warm. That is a fair thing to want. The recall points at what JKMAX put inside the blanket to get you there.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission posted recall 26-778 on September 17, 2026. It covers "all heating pads and heated blankets sold by JKMax." They sold on Amazon from September 2022 through July 2026.
The notice says JKMax is aware of 577 reports "of blankets smoking, melting or burning." It counts 53 burn injuries.
The heating wire, the part you never see
A wire runs under the fabric. That wire makes the heat. The recall says it "can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards."
And so the part the recall names is the part you cannot see or touch. And it runs all night.
Is it safe to leave a heated blanket on all night?
Quick answer: not a JKMAX, not one more night. A burn nurse calls falling asleep on a heating pad a burn risk too.
The cold sheets, the wool socks, the remote on high, the cord behind the nightstand, that feeling the blanket ran your nights instead of the other way around.
All night is hours of heat with you asleep under it.
Brad Wiggins was a nurse manager at the University of Utah Health Burn Center. He was talking about heating pads, and JKMAX recalled its pads too.
He named the danger plainly: "falling asleep on it." He said a pad can cause "a second degree burn over just a few hours."
He named age too. "Maybe as you get older you don't feel as much," he said.
The UC Davis burn center wrote about blankets in its February 2018 newsletter. It told a burn survivor to use the low setting. That cuts the chance of "a contact burn you cannot feel." Its list says to turn warming bedding off "when not in use."
And so the safest heat is the heat you switch off before you sleep.
How do I check mine and get my money back?
Quick answer: look on the back of the white remote. The refund starts with a pair of scissors.
Turn the white remote over. The model number is on the back, and it starts with JKMAX. It is also on a white label on the box.
The recall names models JKMAX-002, JKMAX-7284B, JKMAX-6284B, JKMAX-10090B and JKMAX-8490B. Any JKMAX heated blanket or pad is on it.
Stop using it tonight. The CPSC says to contact JKMax "for a full refund."
JKMAX's own recall page opens with "We offer our sincere apologies." Then it hands you the work.
First you cut the whole power cord. You write "Recalled" and your last name on the remote in permanent marker. Then you email photos, your Amazon order number and the price you paid.
Then you wait. The page says customer service is "currently very busy" and will answer "within 2 weeks." A label comes. You ship it all back, and then the refund comes.
One click to buy it. Scissors, a marker, photos and two weeks for a reply.
The record on JKMAX, in order. Start with the last column.
| What happened | The concern | Named authority and date | What it does NOT mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 195,000 heated blankets and pads recalled | The heating wire can overheat | CPSC recall 26-778, September 17, 2026 | Not that every JKMAX has failed |
| 577 reports of smoking, melting or burning | 53 burn injuries | JKMax, as stated in the CPSC notice | Not 577 fires |
| Sold on Amazon, September 2022 to July 2026 | New blankets, not old ones | CPSC recall notice | Not a recall of other brands |
Is there a case for keeping your heated blanket?
Quick answer: yes, two fair ones, and neither one covers a JKMAX.
One. The UC Davis burn center told a reader, "I wouldn't necessarily trash that electric blanket just yet." It said newer blankets have a shutoff to cut the chance of overheating.
Two. The recall notice counts 53 burn injuries, not 577. That is the number, and I am not going to make it bigger than it is.
So why would I still tell you to unplug it?
Because the JKMAX blankets were new, sold from 2022 to 2026. That same burn center says never to use warming bedding on anyone "insensitive to heat."
You are far from the only one who trusted it. About 195,000 of them went out. If your mother sleeps under one too, check hers the same night.
What keeps you warm instead?
Quick answer: a plain wool blanket on top, with no wire inside and no plug.
Unplug the JKMAX tonight and cut the cord the way the recall page asks.
Then put a heavy blanket on the bed, plain wool or thick cotton. It holds your own heat. Nothing in it can overheat, because nothing in it plugs in.
For the rest of the house, I point you to Switch to America. It is a private membership store. We are the manufacturer. No middlemen, no markup.
Start tonight. Turn the remote over before you get into bed.
Shannon's Advice
Straight talk from ShannonI do not call them grocery stores. They are poison centers meant to do you and your family harm. It is not just the brands who are doing the harm, it is the stores themselves. They allow these toxic products on their shelves. People are sick and dying. This is a very serious matter. How can we ever trust them again?
We can't trust them. That is where Switch to America comes in. We are a new supply chain, built on family values, trust and affordability.
You do not have to take my word for it. The proof is in my blog posts, the recalls, the lawsuits and the fines, and in the app I built called The Family Home Toxic Scorecard. Also, inside my Switch Circle private community, we talk about real solutions.
Women come to me exhausted, in pain, stressed out, and on a list of prescriptions they never wanted. I have spent over 20 years helping women get off prescription medications. I help families reclaim their health.
We cannot stop them. I have stopped expecting to. However, we can stop walking into their stores. We are linking arms and together taking our control back. Control of our health and our finances.

The receipts
- US Consumer Product Safety Commission, recall 26-778, September 17, 2026. JKMAX recalled about 195,000 heated blankets and pads sold on Amazon because the heating wire can overheat. The notice says JKMax is aware of 577 reports of smoking, melting or burning, including 53 burn injuries. What it means: if yours says JKMAX, it is on a federal recall.
- JKMAX recall page, 2026. The company apologizes, then asks you to cut the cord, mark the remote, send photos and wait up to two weeks for a reply. What it means: the refund is real, and it is work.
- University of Utah Health Burn Center, 2018. Nurse manager Brad Wiggins names falling asleep on a heating pad as a burn risk. What it means: time under the heat matters, not only how hot it gets.
- UC Davis burn center newsletter, February 2018. Tells a burn survivor to use the low setting. For all warming bedding: turn it off when not in use, and never use it on anyone insensitive to heat. What it means: even the burn center that says do not trash yours yet gives you ten rules.
Who do you become?
You become the one in your house who checked what was lying on the bed.
It is a cold morning in January. You shake the wool blanket out over the bed and watch it settle.
There is no remote on the nightstand and no cord behind it. You slept the whole night and never once reached for a dial.
It took one unplugged cord to start.
Three minutes, room by room
The blanket was one thing on one bed. The free scan checks the rest of your house and tells you what to swap first. A first name and a cell, one text with your score, and nobody calls. You see your own house for yourself, not on my say-so.
Take the free home scanWhat else do people ask?
Is it safe to sleep with an electric blanket on all night?
Not a JKMAX, not one more night. A Utah burn nurse calls falling asleep on a heating pad a burn risk. If you keep another heated blanket, warm the bed first. Then switch it off and unplug it before you lie down.
Is a heated blanket safe for my mom?
Check hers tonight for the JKMAX name. The UC Davis burn center says never to use one on anyone insensitive to heat. The Utah burn nurse says you may feel heat less as you age.
How do I know if my heated blanket is a JKMAX?
Turn the white remote over. The model number on the back starts with JKMAX. It is also on a white label on the box. JKMAX sold them on Amazon from September 2022 through July 2026.
I have used one for years and I am fine. Why change now?
Years with no trouble count for something. But fine so far is not a safety test. The JKMAX blankets were new, and the notice still counts 577 reports. You get to be the one who checked.
