Is Zicam Safe? Why Church & Dwight Pulled Its Nasal Swabs Again (2026)

Is Zicam Safe? Why Church & Dwight Pulled Its Nasal Swabs Again (2026)

October 12, 2026

The short answer

You feel the first scratch in your throat. You reach for the orange Zicam box before you put the kettle on.

On August 10, 2026, Church & Dwight recalled 318,600 cartons of Zicam nasal swabs. A federal inspection of the plant that makes them found germ test results outside the limit. It is the second time in 14 months the swabs were pulled.

If you have Zicam swabs in your cabinet, throw them out. The swap is a mug, a lemon and a jar of farm honey.

What did the 2026 inspection find in Zicam swabs?

Quick answer: germ test results "out of limit," at the outside plant that makes the swabs.

You want to stop a cold before it takes hold. Nothing wrong with wanting that. The problem is the box Church & Dwight sent to the store.

The federal recall record gives the reason: "out of limit results for microbiological testing." That means the tests for germs came back outside the limit. It turned up in an inspection at the outside plant that makes the swabs.

Three lots are named: UN52882, UN53431 and UN60411. They shipped nationwide.

In 2025 the first notice was a press release. In 2026 it was a letter, so this one was easy to miss.

Wasn't Zicam already recalled in 2025?

Quick answer: yes. Every lot of the swabs, for mold in the cotton tips.

On June 6, 2025, Church & Dwight recalled every lot of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs. Its notice pointed to "fungi in cotton swab components." Fungi means mold.

The same notice says where the danger sits. It warns of "serious and life-threatening blood infections in users whose nasal mucosa may be compromised due to inflammation and mechanical injuries."

Nasal mucosa is the soft lining of your nose. Inflamed is how it feels on day one of a cold.

And so, by the company's own words, the risk sits in a sore nose. That is the nose you have when you reach for the box.

Aspergillus and Penicillium: which molds did Church & Dwight flag?

Church & Dwight's recall page names four fungi it flagged in some swabs. Three are Aspergillus and Penicillium types. The fourth is Exophiala. The page says the results are "not yet conclusive."

Mold on a shower curtain is one thing. Mold on a swab in your nose is another.

Was the Zicam swab in trouble before 2025?

Quick answer: yes. In 2009, over reports of lost smell. Church & Dwight bought Zicam's owner in 2020.

On June 16, 2009, federal regulators told shoppers to stop using Zicam's zinc nasal gel and swabs. They said the products "can permanently damage the sense of smell," the Associated Press reported.

Regulators counted about 130 reports of lost smell since 1999. Those reports came from doctors and patients, "not the manufacturer," the AP wrote.

Health officials said the company had more than 800 lost-smell complaints on file. They asked to see them.

That company was Matrixx Initiatives. It said Zicam's safety was "supported by the cumulative science." In December 2020, Church & Dwight bought Matrixx for $530 million.

The 2026 recall record calls today's swab "Zinc-Free," so it is not the 2009 formula. It is still the Zicam name, and still a swab in your nose.

Three Zicam recalls in 14 months: the swabs twice, and elderberry drops once. Here they are with the 2009 warning.

Isn't a Class II recall the mild kind?

Quick answer: milder than 2025, yes. Only three lots are named. But it is the second swab recall in 14 months.

Here is the part you are probably thinking. This time it is only three lots, and it is not the serious kind.

That is fair, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. On the federal recall scale, Class II is one step below Class I. The 2025 swab recall was Class I, the most serious kind.

In 2025 the company also said no serious harm had been reported.

So why would I still throw the box out?

Two swab recalls in 14 months, both over mold or germs.

You trusted that box to be clean. You do not owe it a third chance.

What can you use instead when a cold starts?

Quick answer: a hot mug of lemon, fresh ginger and honey from a farm near you.

When the scratch starts, put the kettle on. Slice half a lemon and a thumb of fresh ginger into a mug. Pour the hot water over and stir in a spoon of honey.

Buy the honey from a local farm. Get to know the farmer who keeps the bees. Ask where the hives sit and what the bees feed on. A farmer who is proud of it will tell you.

Will a mug stop a cold? I am not going to promise that. Nothing in it goes up your nose. And you know the farmer who keeps the bees.

Shannon's Advice

Straight talk from Shannon

I do not call them grocery stores. They are poison centers meant to do you and your family harm. It is not just the brands who are doing the harm, it is the stores themselves. They allow these toxic products on their shelves. People are sick and dying. This is a very serious matter. How can we ever trust them again?

We can't trust them. That is where Switch to America comes in. We are a new supply chain, built on family values, trust and affordability.

You do not have to take my word for it. The proof is in my blog posts, the recalls, the lawsuits and the fines, and in the app I built called The Family Home Toxic Scorecard. Also, inside my Switch Circle private community, we talk about real solutions.

Women come to me exhausted, in pain, stressed out, and on a list of prescriptions they never wanted. I have spent over 20 years helping women get off prescription medications. I help families reclaim their health.

We cannot stop them. I have stopped expecting to. However, we can stop walking into their stores. We are linking arms and together taking our control back. Control of our health and our finances.

The receipts

  • Federal drug recall record D-0790-2026. Church & Dwight began a Class II recall of Zicam Cold Remedy Medicated Nasal Swabs on August 10, 2026. That is 318,600 cartons in lots UN52882, UN53431 and UN60411, for "out of limit results for microbiological testing." What it means: the swab came off the shelf a second time.
  • Church & Dwight recall notice, June 6, 2025. Every lot of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, for "fungi in cotton swab components." It warns of "serious and life-threatening blood infections" in an inflamed nose. It said no serious harm had been reported. What it means: the warning describes the nose you have during a cold.
  • Church & Dwight recall page, updated July 22, 2025. It names four fungi flagged in some swabs and calls the findings "not yet conclusive." What it means: the company was still working out how far it went.
  • Federal recall records for Zicam since June 2025. The swabs in June 2025 (3,374,918 cartons, Class I, plus 13,632 AllClear cartons), elderberry drops in October 2025 (21,912 bottles, label mix-up), and the swabs again in August 2026. What it means: three recalls in 14 months.
  • The Associated Press on NBC News, June 16, 2009. Regulators told shoppers to stop using Zicam's zinc nasal gel and swabs and sent Matrixx Initiatives a warning letter. Health officials said they asked Matrixx for more than 800 lost-smell complaints it had on file. Matrixx defended the product. What it means: by health officials' account, the company held more complaints than the government did.

Who do you become?

You become the one who knows the farmer behind the honey in your mug.

It is a bright, cold morning in November. You feel the scratch start. You put the kettle on without a second thought.

You slice the lemon and ginger slowly, and the kitchen smells sharp and clean. The honey came from the farmer down the road.

There is no orange box in the cabinet to wonder about. It took one trip to a farm stand.

Three minutes, room by room

You just cleared one box out of your medicine cabinet. The free scan does the rest of the house and tells you what to swap first. You give a first name and a cell. Your score comes by text, and nobody calls. It costs nothing because your own shelves will tell you more than I can.

What else do people ask?

Which Zicam lots are recalled in 2026?

Lots UN52882, UN53431 and UN60411 of Zicam Cold Remedy Medicated Nasal Swabs, UPC 732216301205. They carry expiration dates from April 30 to August 31, 2028.

Is Zicam safe now?

Throw out any Zicam swabs, recalled lot or not. They have been pulled twice in 14 months. For your next cold, make the mug of lemon, ginger and farm honey.

Why do Zicam swabs keep getting recalled?

Both recalls came down to mold or germs. In 2025 the company pointed to fungi in the cotton tips. In 2026, federal inspectors found germ tests out of limit at the outside plant.

I have used Zicam for years and I feel fine. Why switch?

That counts for something. But Church & Dwight's own 2025 notice put the risk in an inflamed nose. That is the nose you have when you reach for it. You get to be the one who cleared the cabinet.
